TODAYS PRAYER by Patrick Massa Birabi

When I was little,
I was told that they were praying for me
To grow into a healthy and prosperous man
With a family, good job and a life of purpose

Now that I am grown,
I wonder, are they still praying?

Because, now that I am grown,
I pray that I will find a job
Even though 23 years of school did not teach me much
And NO! That is not how life is

Now that I am grown,
I pray that I find a wife
A girl with a vision that fits in mine
And the wisdom that she acquired will be an advantage
To how we raise our children
Not a reflection on our differences
And enough for her to realize that
Flamboyant face paint and traffic light clothing is for T.V
That she will have decision to express her self
And have regard for mine

Now that I am grown,
I pray that prices will not rocket by morning
So that basic health care will not be a nightmare
That doctor will be more diligent in their care
Removing apathy and fake smiles
For love and feeling
I pray that the animals and crops will know health too
For our land not to be reduced to nothing

Now that I am grown,
I pray I find purpose in this country
Reduced to nothing by its own
With lack of unity and so on and so forth
I pray I find peace every day
In telling the truth
To irresponsible men, who can’t see their toes!
That sharing is more fulfilling than squandering
And it’s for our future that we need to understand
Democracy and identity

Now that I am grown,
I pray that I have an inheritance
And give better
To my children’s children’s grand children
An inheritance of respect and love for each other
Honesty and patience with each other
And of wisdom and foresight, patriotism and peace

Now that I am grown,
I have more prayers than ever
And I pray that they that were praying
Are still praying
